what could spell fresh trouble for the Aam Admi Party (AAP), activist Medha
Patkar has reportedly expressed unhappiness about the party’s affairs and has
refused to be part of its national executive committee.
In an attempt to strengthen the leadership in the
state, the party had decided to nominate Patkar, along with farmer leader
Wamanrao Chatap and former banker Meera Sanyal, to the committee. Although the
induction was scheduled to take place at the national meet held between June 6
and 8, none of the three agreed to take up the post.
“We had invited them to be a part of the
executive committee, but they asked for more time to respond to our request. So
we have put off the induction for now,” said Yogendra Yadav, senior party

Insiders said Patkar’s reluctance to join the
committee has worried the party leadership the most. “The remarks a state
leader made about Patkar has upset her supporters,” said a source from the
party.
At a meeting of the National Alliance for
People’s Movements (NAPM) in Wardha on Wednesday, members of the alliance
discussed reservations about Patkar’s role in the AAP.
Referring to a recent decision by the Narmada
Control Authority to raise the height of the gates of the Sardar Sarovar dam,
Patkar said, “We have more such battles to fight the new government. Hence,
many NAPM constituents feel the AAP should spell out its stand on numerous
ideological issues.”
Sources in the NAPM said many were not happy with
Patkar’s membership in the AAP because of the lack of ideological coherence.
Senior AAP leaders, however, felt she was
unlikely to play an active role in the party. “She will definitely not quit,
but her involvement with social movements will remain a priority,” they said.
